This series gives Junior triathletes the opportunity to compete in competitive draft-legal racing within western Canada. The series consists of 5 races hosted in three western provinces over 3 months culminating in an overall series winner.
Objectives of the Race Series
The intent of the series is to provide high-level draft-legal racing experience for Junior triathletes within Western Canada. The race series has the following objectives:
- Provide opportunities for Junior triathletes to participate in a number of different race events within Western Canada, including a variety of formats (heats/finals, mixed relay, etc.).
- Provide appropriate draft-legal race experience to triathletes closer to home.
- Support races within Western Canada who are promoting draft-legal racing, and encourage the growth and support of these race organizers.
- Provide opportunities for development clubs in Western Canada to compete against one another.
- Provide a means to motivate development-level triathletes and clubs by awarding points and celebrating the triathletes of Western Canada.
- Create a series of high-quality events in Western Canada that may be suited for national development series races in future years.
- Develop and fortify a culture of high-performance amongst triathletes, coaches and officials within Western Canada.
Western Canada Development Series Schedule
The race schedule will be coordinated by the Western Canada Development Series Committee. The host race directors/clubs will decide on the courses for each race event, ensuring that the course is technically challenging and achieves the minimal standards of a safe draft-legal event. The Western Canada Development Series Committee will work with the race directors/clubs to create a race schedule.
Event Awards
Event awards are the decision of the local race director/club/organizing committee.
Series Points
Individuals participating in the race series will accumulate points as follows:
- Points are awarded for each Junior category athlete on the basis of 1 point for 1st place, 2 points for 2nd place, 3 points for 3rd place. This pattern of points will continue down to 10th place athlete for both male and female categories. All athletes who place 10th or below will receive 10 points for that event.
- Athletes will be ranked by their cumulative total in each category (Junior Male, Junior Female). The leader in the series is determined by the lowest score (given that the minimum 3 races are reached).
- A minimum of 3 races in the series must be competed in AND finished (ie. DNF in a field of less than 10 athletes does not result in points) to be in contention of a series award.
- A tie for any position in a particular race will result in equal points being awarded.
- Discipline Points:
- Points are awarded for each category in each of triathlon’s 3 disciplines, based on the same manner as the individual criteria (1 point for 1st place, 2 points for 2nd place, down to 10th place). Results for each discipline will be based upon completion time of that particular leg (ie. Swim leg, bike leg, run leg).Due to the nature of the timing of each event, the transition time MAY be included in one of the discipline times. If this is the case for a particular event, scoring of that discipline will be the same for all participants.A minimum of 3 race results within the series are required to be in contention of a series award.

- A minimum of 3 race results within the series are required to be in contention of a series award.
- An athlete will only receive points from a particular event for a discipline IF they completed that particular race (ie. Swim leg points will only be received if the athlete completed the race. DNF will not result in any points even if the swim leg was completed).
- Provincial Points
- Points are awarded for the top 3 males and the top 3 females from each province at each event. First, second and third place male athletes for province A receive the number of points that matches their category (Junior) result of the race. First, second and third place female athletes for province A receive the number of points that matches their category (Junior) result of the race. This is done for all provinces within the series.
- A province must have a minimum of 3 males and 3 females complete an event in order to receive any points from that particular event. A province must have a minimum of 3 races where they have accumulated points to be in contention for the Provincial accumulative award.
- Junior and U23 categories are combined for the Provincial Point Series.
Cumulative Awards
Awards will be presented as follows:
- Male/Female Series Champions will be awarded based upon their accumulated point total (lowest score) from their best 3 performances (minimum of 3 races within the series must be completed and an official time/ranking received, ie. DNS, DNF and DSQ will result in 0 points and do not count as a completed race).
- Male/Female Discipline Champions will be awarded based upon their accumulated point total (lowest score) from their 3 best performances within a discipline (ie. Swim leg, bike leg, run leg). (minimum of 3 races completed & a race must be completed in order for discipline points to count, ie. Swim points cannot be accumulated for a DNF even if the swim portion of the race was completed).
- Male/Female and Overall Provincial Champion will be awarded based upon a province’s accumulated point total (lowest score) from their 3 top males and 3 top females at every event. In order to receive Provincial Champion points at an event, there must be a minimum of 3 finishers from that province in both male and female categories. In order to be in contention of the overall Provincial Champion, points must have been received at a minimum of 3 events (only 3 best races will result in points).
